CMO (Chief Marketing Officer)

What does CMO mean?

CMO stands for Chief Marketing Officer. In English, CMO = Chief Marketing Officer, responsible for all marketing activities within a company.

What is a CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) and what do they do?

As the title Chief Marketing Officer suggests, a CMO is the person in the company who is responsible for marketing the company and its products and/or services. This includes planning, developing, implementing and monitoring the overall marketing strategy.
The CMO's primary role is therefore to ensure that the company's marketing efforts are carried out successfully. The specific tasks involved and exactly what a CMO does depends largely on the company in which they work.

Most often, the marketing director's role includes tasks such as:

  • Market research
  • Developing the marketing strategy
  • Establishing marketing objectives and KPIs
  • Coordinating marketing efforts
  • Monitoring and optimising marketing efforts (and measuring against KPIs)
  • Liaising with any marketing partners
  • Reporting, e.g. to the rest of the management team and/or the board
  • Pricing of products

The alternative to hiring a CMO is to use a partner who has full or partial control over your marketing strategy and activities. A marketing agency can also be used as a supplement to the CMO and for outsourcing certain tasks.

What are a Chief Marketing Officer's (CMO) qualifications?

The CMO's responsibilities and thus the associated qualifications depend largely on the company in which they serve as marketing director. Furthermore, expectations of the marketing director's role have changed significantly in modern times with the rise of digital development.

As a baseline, a modern CMO possesses the following qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with marketing and multiple relevant marketing channels.
  • Able to understand, read and use data to make decisions.
  • Has a strong overview while also having an eye for detail.
  • Sharp at planning marketing activities and managing time.
  • Possesses leadership skills.
  • Has a general understanding of associations and organisations.
  • Can put themselves in the customer's shoes and understands how to work with the customer journey and purchasing behaviour.
