HTTP

What is HTTP and what does it mean?

HTTP stands for "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol", and is a protocol for communication on the World Wide Web. More specifically, communication between client devices — typically a web browser — and a web server. These communicate by sending and receiving HTTP requests and responses.

Broadly speaking, the communication between a web server and client devices works as follows:

  1. A client device (web browser) sends an HTTP request to the internet (e.g. when you access facebook.com)
  2. A web server receives this request (Facebook's web server)
  3. The server runs an application to process the request
  4. The server sends an HTTP response (an output) to the browser
  5. The client (browser) receives the response and processes it
