What is HTTP and what does it mean?
HTTP stands for "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol", and is a protocol for communication on the World Wide Web. More specifically, communication between client devices — typically a web browser — and a web server. These communicate by sending and receiving HTTP requests and responses.
Broadly speaking, the communication between a web server and client devices works as follows:
- A client device (web browser) sends an HTTP request to the internet (e.g. when you access facebook.com)
- A web server receives this request (Facebook's web server)
- The server runs an application to process the request
- The server sends an HTTP response (an output) to the browser
- The client (browser) receives the response and processes it
