Linkjuice

What is link juice?

Link juice is a slang term for the value that a link passes to your website. Link juice is a concept used within off-site SEO/link building, which you can read more about here.

When discussing link juice, we refer both to the total amount of link juice flowing from referring domains to your domain, as well as the link juice from individual links and referring domains.

The more link juice, the more link value.

How much link juice does a link pass?

How much link juice is passed depends on the individual link — both the specific page/URL the link comes from, as well as the domain overall.

In broad terms, the amount of link juice from a link (and therefore how good a link is) is assessed based on the following criteria:

  • The link is natural.
  • The link is relevant to your industry.
  • The link comes from a high-authority domain.

Not all three criteria necessarily need to be at the top or fully met for a link to add link juice to your website. The higher a link scores on the three criteria, the more link juice and value it provides for your website.

An example of a link that passes less link juice to a page about children's clothing:

  • The link has been manually added.
  • The link has been added to a link directory containing thousands of links across all industries.
  • The domain the link comes from is brand new, has no backlinks and no organic rankings.

An example of a link that, by contrast, passes a lot of link juice to a page about children's clothing:

  • The link is placed in an article about children's clothing.
  • The link is placed on a domain focused on children and, more specifically, children's clothing.
  • The domain the link comes from is an established domain with a strong link profile and many organic visitors (and strong rankings).
