Portal

What is a portal, and what does it mean?

A portal, also known as an internet portal, is a website that serves as a central gateway to various resources and information on the internet. In the early days of the internet, portals such as Jubii, MSN, and Yahoo were very popular, as they gave users a unified overview of news, weather forecasts, email, links to other websites, and many other useful features.

Portals were designed to be "gateways" to the internet, meaning users could access multiple types of information and services from a single platform. Portals like these also offered a wide range of links and services that made it easy for users to navigate to other parts of the internet.

Today, the traditional internet portal is not as popular as it once was. Users have increasingly shifted to search engines like Google and social media platforms such as Facebook or Reddit as their "entry point" to the internet. These platforms have taken over many of the functions that classic portals previously offered, but portals still exist in specialised forms, particularly within corporate intranets and industries where they serve as a hub for specific information and services.
