What is a web server?
A web server is a computer that stores web server software as well as a website's files such as HTML files, images, videos, CSS files and more. A web server is connected to the internet, and can in this way communicate with other devices connected to the internet, such as your phone or computer. It does this via HTTP requests and responses.
When you access any website, you send a request to the web server on which the website is hosted. The web server then responds and presents you with the page you requested.
Illustrated, this process looks roughly like this:

Types of web servers
There are many different types of web servers, some of the most well-known being Apache, IIS and Nginx. If you have a website, there is a very good chance it is hosted on a web server of one of these three types.
