Google clarifies minor core updates: What does it mean for SEO in 2025?

2025: The year with a record-low number of official updates

2025 has so far been the year with the fewest official Google ranking updates ever.
On Google's Search Status Dashboard, we have only seen three updates:

  • March core update
  • June core update
  • August spam update

This is remarkable at a time when the SEO landscape is typically characterised by monthly or weekly changes.

But now something new is happening.

Google adds a new section to their core update documentation

Yesterday, Google updated their documentation with a new section describing:

  • that Google continuously makes minor core updates
  • that these are not announced publicly
  • that they can affect your ranking positions both up and down
  • that you do not necessarily need to wait for a major core update to see the effect of your optimisations

Google states directly that many small changes happen continuously – changes that are not visible in the status dashboard, but that still affect search results.

The new section therefore underlines something that many SEO specialists already knew intuitively:
Google is in constant motion – even when it is not announced.

So how long does it take to see the effect of SEO?

Google also clarifies that although major core updates can produce clear fluctuations, minor changes and algorithmic adjustments can continuously affect visibility.

This means that:

  • your improvements can have an effect between core updates
  • Google continuously evaluates quality, relevance and user experience
  • SEO results still require patience – but not necessarily months

This illustrates the classic SEO paradox:
Something is always happening, but rarely at exactly the moment we expect.

Our conclusion at Searchmind

Although Google is now saying it more explicitly, it does not change the conclusion:

SEO is won on quality. Not on short-term tactics or gaming the system.

The recipe therefore remains the same:

  • Create helpful, relevant and useful content
  • Write for people – not for the algorithm
  • Ensure good technical hygiene
  • Build authority through credibility, not tricks

AI or not.
The core of SEO does not change.
