Impression

What does an Impression mean, and what is it?

In the context of the internet, impressions means "views" and, more precisely, "number of views". This can be, for example, page views (on a website or in search engines) or ad views (e.g. views of ads on social media).

Here we distinguish between the total number of impressions — which is the total number of views regardless of the user — and the number of unique impressions, which is the number of impressions for unique/different individuals.

Impression in EnglishImpressions means: view.

An example of impressions

An example of impressions is if you run an ad on social media or a display network with the aim of increasing brand awareness and strengthening your brand. Here, a KPI could be the number of impressions/views. In other words: how many people is your message being exposed to?

Another example could be that your website has the following visitors:

  • User 1: views 3 pages on your website
  • User 2: views 1 page on your website
  • User 3: views 15 pages on your website.

That gives a total of 19 impressions (number of views), but only 3 unique impressions.
