Mobile first

What is mobile first, and what does it mean?

"Mobile first" is a term that covers an approach to web design where websites are designed primarily for mobile devices, and subsequently for larger tablet and desktop devices.

Within search engine optimisation, the "Mobile first" concept is typically used in relation to search engines' "Mobile-first indexing", which means that Google, and other search engines, are increasingly moving towards indexing websites based on the mobile version rather than the desktop version, as was previously the case.

The reason for this shift, which truly took hold in July 2019 when Google announced that all new websites from that point would start on their "Mobile-first index", is that the proportion of users accessing the internet from mobile devices has now surpassed the number of desktop users.

In fact, 52% of internet traffic in Q4 of 2019 came from mobile devices. And this share is only expected to grow in the future.

So what does mobile first mean for you as a website owner?

For you as a website owner, this means it is extremely important to ensure that your website's mobile version is as mobile-friendly as possible.

In addition, it is important to make sure that no important elements are hidden from mobile visitors, such as category texts etc., as this can seriously harm your SEO if your website is on the mobile-first index.

In short, it all comes down to ensuring you optimise the user experience for mobile visitors on your site as much as possible and do not neglect the mobile version of your website.
