Google rolls out 3 major changes to Smart Bidding in summer 2026

24. juni 2026 PPC

If you thought summer would bring complete calm in the Google Ads engine room, think again. Google has just unveiled three major changes to Smart Bidding, landing over the coming months.

Google Ads Smart Bidding Updates 2026

Automation is moving faster than ever, and the new features will change the way the algorithm behaves when it comes to your budgets and bidding strategies. Is your setup ready to embrace the changes, or do you risk them locking your performance to the wrong numbers?

Here are the 3 most important updates to navigate by:

1. Stabilisation of budget-constrained campaigns (17 August)

Google is now fundamentally changing its backend algorithm for campaigns with the status "Limited by budget". The goal is to ensure far more stable and predictable performance relative to your tCPA and tROAS targets — especially during periods when you adjust your budget. You will start seeing warnings and information directly in your account from 6 July.

2. Smart Bidding Exploration (Global rollout)

A brand new feature is hitting Search and Performance Max (PMax). With Smart Bidding Exploration, you get the ability to define a so-called "ROAS tolerance". This gives the algorithm the freedom to be more adventurous and explore new, converting searches — without risking that you undermine your overall efficiency targets.

3. Promotion Mode (New Beta)

No more short-lived flash sales or wild birthday campaigns completely confusing your Smart Bidding for weeks afterwards. The new beta feature lets you schedule temporary periods of higher budget flexibility and aggressive bidding around specific events — after which the campaign returns to normal operation without having contaminated its historical data foundation.

The strategic implication

Automation places enormous demands on ensuring your tCPA and tROAS targets actually reflect your real business model and your actual contribution margin. If they don't, you risk the new updates locking your performance to the wrong numbers.

What should you do now?

Block out time in your calendar during July. Use it to clean up your budgets, get a handle on your contribution margins, and scrutinise your tROAS targets. The sharper your data is now, the more the new updates will work for you rather than against you.
