***Update to this post (11 June 2026): New features coming to Shopify before the deadline
If you run an e-commerce business, there is an important deadline you need to mark in your calendar: 19 June 2026.
As a result of new EU regulations aimed at strengthening consumer protection in online trade, the Consumer Contracts Act is being amended. This means that all webshops in the EU must, by this date at the latest, offer a clear, easily accessible and digital cancellation feature. In other words, consumers must be able to cancel or withdraw from their purchase directly online via a streamlined digital process.
For your business, this is now a matter of due diligence to ensure compliance and protect your brand's e-mark certification.
What does the new cancellation feature require of your platform?
According to the official guidelines, from 19 June 2026 it will no longer be legally sufficient for the customer to proactively contact you by email or phone. Instead, you must provide a dedicated digital form that minimises friction for the consumer.
The legislation sets out three specific requirements for the user journey:
Visible and strategic placement: The feature must not be buried at the bottom of the terms and conditions. It must be placed in a logical and easily accessible location – for example in the customer service hub, on the contact page, or directly on the user's personal profile.
Simple data collection: The form must be straightforward and collect the necessary basic information such as full name, order number and email address.
Clear Call-to-Action (CTA): The action button must be visually prominent and have unambiguous wording – e.g. "Confirm cancellation".
When the customer submits the form, the rules also dictate that your system must immediately send an automatic digital receipt as confirmation of receipt.
EU Directive 2023/2673 introduces a new requirement regarding the right of withdrawal. If you sell online to consumers in the EU, you must provide a clearly visible electronic withdrawal function, such as a button or a link, which customers can use to exercise their right of withdrawal directly from your store.
