500 server error

What does a 500 server error mean?

A 500 error, known in English as an "Internal Server Error", is a status code returned by a web server to indicate that the server is unable to perform the requested action.

It is a very general error message that does not provide further detail about the specific problem — only that something went wrong on the server in connection with the request.

Most commonly, it is caused by things such as:

  • Timeout from an external resource
  • Incorrect file/folder permissions
  • Misconfiguration in .htaccess

However, as described above, it is a very general and broad server code, and the cause can therefore also be many other things.

More specific 500 error status codes

In addition to the common "Error 500", which does not describe the error in further detail, there are also more specific 5xx codes that provide more precise information about what went wrong.

These include, among others:

  • 501 - Not implemented
  • 502 - Bad gateway
  • 503 - Service unavailable
  • 504 - Gateway timeout
  • 505 - HTTP version not supported
  • 506 - Variant also negotiates
  • 507 - Insufficient Storage
  • 508 - Loop detected
  • 510 - Not extended
  • 511 - Network Authentication Required
