Anchor Text

What does anchor text mean, and what is it?

The term "anchor text" refers to the text content displayed in a hyperlink on a website. Anchor text is typically written to be descriptive of what you can expect to find on the page being linked to.

If we look at it from a more technical perspective, a link looks like this in HTML:

<a href="https://google.com">Google</a>

This HTML code links to google.com with the anchor text "Google".

What do anchor texts mean for search engines and SEO?

Anchor texts have always been an important factor in link building. A few years ago, it was possible to be very aggressive with anchor texts by consistently linking to the page you wanted to rank, using the exact keyword you wanted to rank for, and thereby achieving better positions.

For example, if you wanted to rank for "Shoes", you could create a large number of links with the anchor text "Shoes" pointing to https://enshjemmeside.dk/sko. However, this no longer works today.

Today, it is far more about quality over quantity. Your anchor text distribution should ideally be as natural as possible, while still containing relevant keywords that can help improve your rankings.

What constitutes an optimised and natural anchor text distribution will always depend on the specific case.
