Bing

What is Bing?

Bing is a search engine that helps people searching the web find relevant results for their particular search queries. It is the second largest search engine in the world, measured by market share, after the search engine we all know: Google.

How many people use Bing?

Globally, Bing has a market share of around 2.5%, which may sound rather modest. But when you consider how many daily searches are conducted worldwide, it still adds up to a significant number of searches performed on Bing every day.

According to Bing itself, the search engine holds a 9% market share in Denmark, which corresponds to 13 million monthly searches.

Who owns Bing?

Bing is owned by Microsoft and was launched in 2009 as a replacement for Microsoft's previous search engine "Live Search".

Who uses Bing?

Previous studies have shown that it is primarily people over the age of 35 who use Bing, with the majority being in the 55 to 64 age group.

There is a general tendency for less IT-savvy individuals to use Bing, as it is set as the default search engine in Windows. To use Google as your default search engine, you therefore need to actively go in and set it as such.

Some people do not do this and therefore use Bing as their search engine. You also see, in various organisations and companies where employees/members are issued computers on which it is not possible to change the default search engine, that Bing is used extensively.

An alternative search engine to Google

The vast majority of us use Google as our preferred search engine and are presumably quite happy with it. But should you wish to use a different search engine than Google, Bing is a very good alternative and arguably the best alternative in the Danish market.

Bing must not be ignored in your SEO efforts

There is an unfortunate tendency for many people working with search engine optimisation to completely ignore Bing, which is not ideal given the many millions of searches conducted on the search engine every year.

It naturally varies from industry to industry, but we have seen examples of websites within certain sectors where over 10% of their organic traffic comes from Bing. It is therefore definitely not a search engine you should neglect in your SEO work.

If you work in an industry where a significant portion of your potential customers use Bing, it also makes sense to run paid ads on the search engine, just as you can on Google with "Google Ads".
