Marketing Manager

What is a marketing manager?

A Marketing Manager is the person in a company who holds overall responsibility for marketing the business and its products/services.

What does a marketing manager do?

As the title suggests, the marketing manager is the person responsible for the company's marketing. This typically involves the marketing manager overseeing the planning, development, implementation and monitoring of the company's marketing strategy and initiatives.

The marketing manager's primary role is to ensure that the marketing of the company they lead is executed successfully. What specific tasks this entails, and exactly what a marketing manager does day-to-day, depends largely on the company they work for.

The following tasks are most commonly part of the marketing manager's responsibilities:

  • Market research and analysis.
  • Developing a marketing strategy and plan.
  • Defining objectives and KPIs.
  • Coordinating marketing efforts.
  • Monitoring and measuring KPIs and performance, and general optimisation.
  • Liaising with external marketing partners where applicable.
  • Reporting to the rest of management and/or the board of directors.

The alternative to hiring a marketing manager is to work with a partner who has full or partial control over your marketing strategy and associated initiatives. A marketing agency can also be used as a supplement to the marketing manager and department for outsourcing selected tasks.
