PHP

What is PHP, and what does it stand for?

PHP stands for "Hypertext Preprocessor" and is a server-side coding language. This means it is a coding language that runs on a web server, and not client-side in a browser as, for example, HTML does.

Specifically, it works like this: before a web page is sent to the user who has requested it, the web server on which the website resides calls PHP to interpret and execute the functions "called upon" in the PHP script. Afterwards, the final web page — pure HTML code — is served to the browser, which can then display it to the user.

Several of the most popular backend systems on the internet today, such as WordPress and Magento, use PHP.

What is a PHP server?

As mentioned earlier, PHP is a server-side coding language. A PHP server is therefore a web server that can read and understand the PHP language. Not all web servers use PHP.

In order to write and run PHP at all, it must be done via a PHP server.

What does PHP look like? PHP code example

<?php

echo "PHP output!";

?>

<?php "opens" the PHP code and must always be written before any PHP code.

echo is a PHP function that echoes the input given to it. In this case, the input is "PHP output!"

?> "closes" the PHP code and must always be written when closing a PHP code section.
