Redirect

What is a redirect?

A redirect is a forwarding from one URL to another on a website.

For example, you may have a product that has been discontinued on your webshop, but a newer model has been introduced. In such a case, it makes good sense to send visitors from the old model's page to the new model's page.

To do this, you can create a redirect from the old address to the corresponding new one.

If the old product was located at https://www.eksempelshop.dk/gammelt-produkt and the new one at https://www.eksempelshop.dk/nyt-produkt, you can create a redirect from /gammelt-produkt to /nyt-produkt.

This ensures that visitors reach the new product instead of simply being met with a 404 page.

Redirects and SEO

From an SEO perspective, redirecting also ensures that the value the original address has built up with search engines is passed on to the new address. For this to happen, it is important that you set up the redirect as a 301 redirect (permanent redirect). Read more about the different types of redirects below.

Different types of redirects

An important consideration when working with redirects is that several different types exist. From an SEO standpoint, it is essential to set up the correct type of redirect so that search engines have the best possible basis for understanding them.

  • 301 redirect - Permanent redirect (This is the type you will need in 99/100 cases when it comes to SEO
  • 302 redirect - Found, but temporarily redirected (This type of redirect is relevant if the redirect should only be active for a few days and is therefore temporary. It could, for example, be relevant for Black Friday if you have created an alternative landing page for the occasion)
  • 303 redirect - See other (Should primarily be used by developers)
  • 307 redirect - Temporary redirect (Should primarily be used by developers)
  • 308 redirect - Permanent redirect (Experimental) (Should primarily be used by developers)

Redirect extension

By default, there is no way to see in your browser whether you are being redirected when you visit a URL.

If you have a website and want to keep track of whether you are being redirected when visiting various addresses on your site, you can make good use of the Chrome extension Redirect Path.
