What are backlinks?
Backlinks are links that point "back" to a given page. If, for example, tv2.dk links to google.dk, then Google has a backlink from tv2.dk.
Which backlinks are good?
The best backlinks you can get meet at least one of the following criteria — ideally several:
- The link is natural
- The link is relevant to your industry
- The link comes from a domain with high authority
First and foremost, it is important for a good backlink that it is natural. This criterion will, however, most often be met if a backlink comes from a page/content that is relevant to your specific industry.
By natural we mean a backlink that, if you had placed a link on your website yourself, could also have arisen organically and therefore naturally.
For example, if you have a webshop where you sell home interiors. If we then imagine that you receive a link from an article on a home interior magazine, such as boliga.dk. This link would be natural and relevant, as it comes from relevant content and a page where it is not inconceivable that you could have obtained it organically.
By "a domain with high authority" we mean a domain that has authority in the eyes of the search engines — partly in the form of a strong link profile. If you are not very experienced in SEO and link building, it can be difficult to assess whether a given domain has a strong link profile. Here, third-party tools such as Ahrefs and Moz, each with their own metrics indicating a given domain's link profile, can be helpful.
For Ahrefs, it is the "DR" score, which stands for "Domain Rating". In the Moz tool, the equivalent score is called "DA" and stands for "Domain Authority". These scores can often provide a good indication of how strong a domain is.
It is important to keep in mind, however, that these metrics are the tools' own and have nothing to do with Google's assessment of a given domain. Nevertheless, they can usually give a good picture of how strongly Google views a domain.
Which backlinks should I have?
First and foremost, the overall goal of your link profile should be for it to look as natural as possible while also being as strong as possible.
You should therefore have a broad range of diverse links in your link profile, such as strong links from authoritative domains, profile links, forum links, links from social media, etc. In addition, there should be a good distribution of nofollow and dofollow links in your link profile, as this will likewise help make it look as natural as possible.
Last but not least, the distribution of anchor values used to link to your website plays a role in having a natural and strong link profile.
